New ideas

The books project or the random acts of kindness are but a raindrop in the ocean of good ways to spread kindness and telling the story about them.

  • Often i go through the main station here in CPH and sometimes i’m stopped by a guy asking me for a bit of change. I’m not proud to say that most often i say i don’t have any…

But i think this is the case with most of us – for many different reasons i’m sure. One i came to think of is the fact that even though i DO know i have some coins in my wallet – I don’t like taking it out and showing this guy that i might have more than a few coins to give him..

SO i thought perhaps we could do a “FILL BEFORE YOU EMPTY” category on BE THAT SOMEONE. The basic idea to make it a not so random act to give money, but to prepare before you enter a place where you know you might encounter someone in need. Put the coins in your right hand pocket and be ready to grab them all :)

    How about that?

Update: Ok, so after a couple of test runs doing this, i’ve decided to do a category called “Empty your pockets”. Hope to see some good storys about you emptying your pockets and someone asking for a little change gets a pocketfull of change :)

GO make someone happy – GO be that someone!

I am a genuine believer in kindness and giving, but I do not agree in emptying your pockets to people asking for it on the streets. Is doing a child’s homework an act of kindness? Giving money to beggers on the street makes them dependent on us. Why not do them a favor and not give them any change, but instead a word of encouragement. Ya, money might make ‘em happy, but only in the short run. It’s easy to empty your pockets, but that doesn’t make it right. Why don’t you ask them to teach you something and help them remember how smart and capable they really are.

Thanks for your input! You are right, money isn’t everything and I also recently had the fortune to hear the story of one of the known faces of the streets in Copenhagen. He doesn’t actually need money. Living in a protected house, he’s not on the streets begging but doing the only thing he does – sing. So a bit of appreciation is probably better than the change i can give him..
